MOOKAITE also known as Mookaite jasper, mookite, mookalite, mookerite, moakite, moukalite and moukaite. However, mookaite is considered the correct spelling and is named after the local area where is was first found and comes from — in outcrops, principally Mooka Station Creek, (a sheep farm of around 700,000 acres), on the west side of the Kennedy Ranges near Gascoyne Junction which is about 100 miles inland from the coastal town of Carnarvon. Mookaite is found only in Australia and is actually a fossiliferous sedimentary rock. It is reasonably common to find cavities left by decomposed belemnite casts or in some rare cases , impressions of ammonites. (Windalia Radiolarite) Microscopic examination shows this rock consists of the remains of tiny organisms known as radiolaria that have an unusual skeletal structure of opaline silica. Billions of these little critters were deposited as sediment in the shallow areas of ancient sea beds. When the seas retreated, these sediments were cemented into solid rock by silica carried in groundwater. The type and degree of silicification varies from place to place, forming opalite, chert and chalcedony. It has been found in many very bright colors, reds, purples, tan, snow white, ivory white, pinks and many other shades. Sometimes but not often it will have black dendrites.

UNDERSTANDING "QUARTZ" CRYSTAL

The usage and applications for quartz crystal devices is increasing with each new technological advancement in computers and peripherals, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and industrial electro- nics. More and more engineers are now responsible for specifying crystal parame- ters for their specific application. Along with this new responsibility comes the need to better understand crystal devices. This Engineering Note will attempt to take away some of the mystery in trying to define certain parameters for crystals.

Quartz and Its Properties:

The quartz crystal or resonator operates due to the piezoelectric effect. The piezoelectric effect of quartz allows it to produce an electrical charge on its surface when the same surface(s) are distorted or subjected to pressure. This distortion allows the crystal to vibrate at a particular resonant frequency. Conversely, the application of an alternating voltage produces the same type of mechanical vibration. Quartz is ideal for use as a frequency determining device because of its predictable thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics. The quartz crystal is one of the few devices that can provide a high-Q (quality factor) that is needed for precise frequency control in oscillators used as a timing standard. Natural quartz is rarely used as found in nature (especially in electrical applications), except as a gemstone. Natural quartz crystals have many chemical impurities and physical flaws. As a result, a commercial process of manufacturing pure, flawless, electronics-grade quartz was Quartz can be as clear as ice (ancients called quartz ‘Holy Ice’ and thought that it came from the heavens) or milky white. It can have inclusions, veils, bubbles, formations, etc. Clarity is not important for a quartz crystal's energetic quality.
